The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is an independent scientific agency of the European Union, established on 28 January 2002. It is primarily responsible for providing independent, scientific assessments and advice on food safety to EU decision-makers. EFSA was created in response to a series of major food safety incidents in Europe during the late 1990s, including the Belgian dioxin contamination of edible oils, the UK BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) and foot-and-mouth disease crises.

Based in Parma, Italy, EFSA was officially opened in 2005. The agency employs over 1,500 experts and 400 staff members, working across various scientific fields including chemical contaminants in food and feed, microbiological risks, nutrition, pesticides, animal health, and animal welfare.

EFSA provides scientific, independent risk assessments that underpin EU food safety decision-making, ensuring that European consumers have access to safe and high-quality food. Its official website (https://www.efsa.europa.eu/) offers comprehensive information on food safety, scientific opinions, risk assessments, and the latest updates.
